Currently, image reconstruction of amorphous samples using SPring-8 is
conducted in a three sequential steps: collection of coherent x-ray scattering
data, measurement of scattering distribution with two-dimensional detectors,
and realization of actual image with mathematical phase retrieval.

Admission to the Science Center

retrieval for 1024x1024 pixel image reconstruction, while conventional
CPU-based system spends more than 20 minutes to do the same.
The Ishikawa Laboratory, in consideration of this issue, requested the
Ebisuzaki Laboratory to develop a two-dimensional FFT accelerator that makes
it possible to quickly process computationally intensive two-dimensional FFT.

conducts phase retrieval 13 times faster compared to presently-used highest
spec CPU -based systems.
The FFT accelerator performs phase retrieval 13 times faster than the
conventional system based on fastest CPU: a 1000-repetition phase retrieval
for 1024 x1024 pixel image reconstruction is done in mere 87 seconds, while
the conventional system takes 20 minutes to do the same. IPFlex supplies high performance,
multifunctional processors that are dynamically reconfigurable, and also

Professor Kip Thorne of the California
Institute of Technology was presented the California Scientist of the Year
at this year's Discovery Ball, the California Science Center's annual gala,
held June 25, 2005.

The California Science Center established the California Scientist of the

Thorne's contributions to gravity wave research extend to his seminal work
in the area of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements and well beyond the
concerns of gravity wave detectors .
