The findings were
verified by Slooh member Lode Stevens, an astronomer with the Europlanetarium
in Belgium, using Slooh's online telescopes . Deluxe membership is $99.

About Slooh
Bringing the rhythms and wonders of outer space to people of all ages,
Slooh's mighty telescopes are the centerpiece of LIVE interactive 'missions '
to hundreds of known wonders of the universe.slooh.com. "Something is definitely making a mess there , and pumping
energy equivalent to a supernova every century into the gas.

These results came from an analysis of 56 elliptical galaxies in the
Chandra data archive by associate professor Thomas Statler and doctoral
candidate Steven Diehl, both of the Physics and Astronomy department at the
Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.

Supernova 2005ax
and 2005bh were discovered by amateur astronomer Tim Puckett.
"This showcases the power of the Slooh community cooperating together to
explore the universe" said Michael Paolucci, President and Founder of Slooh. Most recently,
Slooh partnered with Discovery. Except for rare
cases, violent activity in elliptical galaxies was thought to have stopped
long ago.

"Slooh has been a very useful
resource for confirming Supernovae. Astronomers believe
massive clouds of hot gas in these galaxies have been stirred up by
intermittent explosive activity from centrally located super-massive black
holes.
"Most elliptical galaxies have traditionally been considered to be quiet
places, like placid lakes," Statler said.

"
In confirming the discovery, Stevens said, "Because of Slooh's unique
technology and excellent viewing location , we were able to confirm the
existence of the supernovae, which our observatory would not have been able to
achieve alone. Slooh's location and ease of operation makes it
ideal for this task. Slooh is available
online for a 7-night free trial and requires only a 56K modem and Flash 7.

"
Although supernovae are a possible energy source, a more probable cause
was identified . Statler and Diehl's analysis indicates the same phenomena are also
occurring in isolated elliptical galaxies.

WASHINGTON, Black holes are creating havoc in
unsuspected places, according to a new study of images of elliptical galaxies
made by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. The scientists detected a correlation between the shape of the
hot gas clouds and the power produced at radio wavelengths by high-energy

northern constellation Cepheus.

"This is another example of how valuable it is to observe the universe at
different wavelengths besides just the traditional optical wavelengths," said
NASA's Chandra Program Scientist Wilt Sanders.
Chandra researchers presented their data today during the 207th meeting of
the American Astronomical Society in Washington .

SN2005bh is in spiral galaxy UGC 6495, four
degrees north of the "tail" of the constellation Leo and 300 million light
years away., starting as early as

Additional solo time can be purchased in 15-minute intervals for $19. Slooh has stationed
high-powered telescopes at the Institute of Astrophysics in the Canary
Islands, one of the world's best locations for astronomical viewing . Contrary to expectations, they found the
distribution of the multimillion-degree gas in these galaxies differed
markedly from that of the stars.

to see the night sky during daylight hours in the U.S. A supernova discovery
is both scientifically important as well as fascinating," said David Bishop,

amateur and professional astronomers alike. Before you can report a supernova you
need a confirmation image .

Previous X-ray studies have shown elliptical galaxies contain multimillion
degree gas whose mass is a few percent of the stars in it.
"These results are part of an emerging picture that shows the impact of
super-massive black holes on their environment is far more pervasive than
previously thought," Statler said.

This is a great discovery for astronomy. It was expected the hot gas would have settled into an equilibrium
shape similar to, but rounder, than the stars.

"Without these X-ray and radio

still evolving due to the interaction with their central black holes.

The discovery of far-reaching
explosive activity, due to giant central black holes in these old galaxies,
was a surprise to astronomers. This power output can be traced back to the centers of the
galaxies, where super-massive black holes are located.
