But we must never let our guard down,
especially in educating new parents," said NHTSA Administrator Jeffrey Runge,
MD. With a convex passenger side mirror the
driver will be able to detect a vehicle in the next lane even if the vehicle
is as far forward as the passenger side window, while the driver of a vehicle
with a flat passenger side mirror, as required by S6, cannot see the vehicle
until it is almost 20 feet behind the vehicle.

In 2004, the European Union (EU) passed regulation to address new rules to
eliminate the "blind spot" on motor vehicles that would entail:
-- Increasing the mandatory minimum field of vision for certain vehicles;
-- Mounting additional mirrors on certain vehicles;
-- Upgrading technical characteristics of mirrors in line with technical
progress;
-- Replacing certain mirrors with other indirect vision systems, such as
camera/monitor systems.

LOS ANGELES, Paul Raul of the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirms that a recall of standard
equipment side-view mirrors is likely due to safety issues. Department of

attachments be added to vehicles.
ASF has been a leader in advocating that all automobile companies take
remedial action on the production of rear-view mirrors and begin manufacturing
safe side-view mirrors as standard equipment.

Total Child Deaths Down 18 Percent Since 1996; Front Seat Deaths Down
46 Percent; Safety Advocates Hail Remarkable Public Health Achievement

WASHINGTON, A new study shows that a dramatic
shift in behavior by parents to place children in a back seat of vehicles,
coupled with increased use of child safety seats and safety belts, resulted in
an 18 percent reduction in overall fatalities among children ages 0-12. "More
children are surviving in motor vehicle crashes because of these efforts."
The study examined fatality trends between 1992 and 2003 using the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis
Reporting System (FARS ) data, police-reported crash data, the NHTSA National
Occupant Protection Use Surveys (NOPUS), and earlier NHTSA child fatality
studies.

The analysis showed the shift to be more immediate among
younger children, although older children also experienced a significant
decline in total deaths after 1998 ." The study, entitled: "The Impact of

Examination of Fatality Trends among Younger and Older Age Groups," was also
authored by Donna Glassbrenner, PhD and Richard P.

Other factors that likely contributed to the fatality reductions include
