What is, therefore, the
place of life sciences in today's European cultures? How can we monitor
scientific and technical
progress and make sure that European citizens benefit
from research developments? Good governance
is impossible without responsible
citizens. But is it possible to imagine citizenship without cultural
awareness? It is inconceivable to discuss the repercussions of research
without taking into account
what science is able -- or unable -- to achieve. Doctors and consumers drawn from the general public
were
given an accident scenario -- a driver swerving to avoid a wild animal
crashes into a tree
-- and then asked whether they would stop to help.S., at 908-638-5555 or

How do the most recent developments in the life sciences affect
our
understanding of what it is to be Human?
In March 2004 in Genoa, under the auspices of
the European Group on Life
Sciences, this question was debated by leading figures in science, in
philosophy, in the arts, from all over Europe."

Extract from the Preface
"In this context, I attach great importance to public debates on the
increasing impact of life sciences
and biotechnological innovations.
Findings include:
Among those describing themselves
as politically conservative
or politically liberal, 97% and 98% respectively agreed to
help
99% of those who attend worship services weekly and 98% of
those who never
attend services were willing to help
Religious affiliation played no role in determining who
might
be a Good Samaritan: almost identical percentages (in the low
to high 90
% range) of all religious groups, as well as
self-described secularists and spiritual but
not religious
persons, stated that they would be willing to help
A majority of physicians
believe that religious upbringing is
either very important (28%) or important (41%) to one
's
willingness to act as a Good Samaritan
75% of physicians support "Good Samaritan
" laws that protect
doctors, and in some states, the general public, from
liability
73% of physicians and the general public believe that
individual compassion is sufficient
to ensure altruistic
behavior and that state intervention is not necessary
"The public
should find comfort in the fact that, fear of lawsuits
and personal risk notwithstanding, so many
doctors and fellow citizens
are ready to act as Good Samaritans. See www.net

How compassionate are Americans when

that 98% of

Americans' suspicion of
