WASHINGTON----NPRA, the

The NPRA data mirrors the OSHA
300A form and includes the
Total Recordable Incidence Rate; Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred
Rate; Day Count Rate; and
the latest year where data is available from the BLS -- that the
average
recordable injury and illness rate for private industry was
5. Non-members may obtain a summary report

Data for the I+I
Report
is submitted by NPRA members according to the regulations
established by the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration
(OSHA). This
session will focus on how a school's mission and clientele
differ from other
institutions, how some hazards are unique while others are the same as other
facilities
and will demonstrate how safety program development, training and
using the school's staff can reduce
hazards and injuries in schools.imass safetynet

Some examples of imminent hazard conditions
that require immediate
correction include, but are not limited to are no or inadequate surface
protection
material (75% of all injuries result from fall incidents); head
entrapment hazards (56 % of playground
fatalities result from strangulation);
entanglement hazards (56 % of playground fatalities result

emergency rooms for playground-related injuries with
children aged five to nine suffering the most injuries. Of the non-fatal playground-related injuries
, Norris said 75
percent occurred on public playgrounds, such as schools and daycare centers.
"We must identify the hazards and eliminate or reduce the loss exposures by
first removing hazardous
play equipment and/or playground conditions, provide
properly installed age-appropriate play equipment
and continually inspect and
maintain the equipment and the playground.osha optimieren
The report contains data for
the calendar year 2004.
These injuries include fractures, concussions, dislocations, amputations
and
internal injuries.scba trainum

In 2004, 36 member facilities worked
a full year without a
recordable incident, up from 27 facilities in 2003.

between 1990 and 2000
, 147 children under the age of 14 died of playground-
related injuries and 30 percent of those fatalities
occurred on school
playgrounds.

"To ensure the understanding of the
policies and procedures, they
must be put in writing and reviewed often to
ensure that they are effective and currently compliant
with local, state, and
federal regulations. Statistics
show that 44 percent of playground injuries
are the result of the use of the
equipment in a manner other than that intended by the designer,
the use of
age-inappropriate equipment, and the lack of or inadequate supervision.safetynet tagout
The I+I report
provides NPRA member companies with a "benchmark"
to use to compare their facility safety programs
with others in the
industry.
During her session today titled "Are You Providing Safe Playgrounds
for
Children of All Ages?" at the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA)
annual conference
, Norris, a noted expert in school safety, provided an
overview of the problem, the causes of the
accidents, solutions, a review of
the recommended and not-recommended playground equipment for children
of all
ages, how to establish and carry out playground inspections, the training of
playground
supervisors and guidelines, training in the safe use of playground
equipment, and discarding unsafe
equipment.trending imass
The focus is on promoting continuous improvement with the
ultimate goal of no recordable
incidents at all NPRA member
facilities.
NPRA is a national trade association whose members include
the
owners and operators of virtually all U. These playground inspections should be documented
and
could be conducted by the playground supervisors," Norris said.
Norris will present a session
titled "School Safety: More Than Violence"
at the ASSE Safety 2005 Conference to be held June 12
-15 in New Orleans.

"We must also educate our administrators, children, and parents to the
very real hazards present
in our playgrounds, so that they have the knowledge
necessary to play safely," Norris added.
Playground
supervisors should be trained regarding age-appropriate equipment,
safe use procedure, playground
hazards, the organization's disciplinary
procedures, and, how to manage children."
The National
Playground Safety Institute, Norris noted, states that
playground operators, such as schools and
cities, can control the causes of
injurious conditions by implementing a Playground Safety Management
