's
leadership in the Preserve America Community effort.
Louisville's historic Portland neighborhood
developed along the falls of
the Ohio River to help commerce and travelers heading both east and
west.
Both the Louisiana and Mississippi state historic preservation officers
are receiving
grants to help them rebuild their heritage tourism industry in
the wake of last summer's hurricanes

Preserve America also has two new components -
- Preserve America Community
Neighborhoods and Preserve America Grants -- the first of which are being
announced today.
Last July, we met in Nashville, Tennessee, to announce the Preserve
America
Community Neighborhood program and to open the application process. The
District gets plenty of
use out of the Union Gospel Tabernacle, today called
the Ryman Auditorium.
This great neighborhood
is not only one of our first Preserve America
Community Neighborhoods; it will also receive one of
our first Preserve
America Grants.

The most challenging part of preserving these recordings digitally
is that the

But they will use federal dollars to employ local organizations
to help us
learn more about and better manage wildlife and preserve critically important
wetlands

a richly historic part of our country, and we all want to see its treasures
restored
, refurbished, and reopened for visitors. The second round application

deadline is May 15, 2006, so communities should

Washington, D. BUSH: It's great to be here on Capitol Hill, one of our
nation's
most historic places, to recognize communities that honor their history and
their heritage

the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, thank you very
much, John. And
certainly I feel that every single day, having the privilege to live in the
White
House, to live in those and walk the halls of those very same rooms that
every one of our presidents
lived in, except for our first, because, of
course, the White House wasn't built until John Adams
was President, although
President Washington picked the site for the house -- to live with the
furnishings
and the art and all of the things that belonged to different
presidents. The Shelby Street Bridge
, completed in 1909, still carries traffic. Kentucky has 66 Preserve
America Communities and Neighborhoods
, more than any other state by a

The research projects will
be funded by the federal government under the
State Wildlife Grants Program (SWG), while the wetlands
conservation project
will be financed by the federal government through the Landowner Incentive
Program
(LIP). LIP requires a 50-percent funding match, which will be met by the
Berks County Conservancy
, the landowner and other interested parties. "Wetlands are so important to so
many wildlife species
and, unfortunately, too many of Pennsylvania's have been
lost to development. And especially to
our co-hosts,
Congressman Michael Turner and Congressman Brad Miller. I also want to recognize Alan
Hantman, the
Architect of the Capitol. He has furniture that belonged to
Grant.
In January
, 2004, we announced the first eight Preserve America
Communities.
Today we'll award 45 Preserve
America Grants.5
million and represent 28 states from every region of our nation.5 million is available
for a second round of Preserve America
Grants in 2006.

The research projects are as follows:
Examination of Bat Mortality at Penobscot Mountain
Wind Farm: This
$153,000 project, proposed by East Stroudsburg University, will investigate
pre
-construction monitoring techniques and post-construction mortality of bats
and birds at the proposed
Penobscot Mountain Wind Farm in Luzerne County., will contribute to our understanding
of foraging
and roosting habitat needs of small-footed bats. Reproductive small-footed bats have
been captured
during surveys at Lake Raystown. Pennsylvania has received LIP appropriations for the past
two years
. They used a Walkie RecordAll, then a state-of-the-art
recording device, and write-able media tapes
called sonobands. In fact, the full-service archival
lab that the Museum contracted to preserve the
recordings did not

Pennsylvania's wildlife is an expensive
and never-ending job.S. To be eligible,
state fish and wildlife agencies, landowners, or non-profit
groups must put up
at least 25 percent of the cost of projects. Thank

and especially to their children

who are here -- I also want to mention that the President's budget requests
$10 million for Preserve

review and rank projects, and then secure Board of Commissioners approvals for

projects. State distribution of grant monies is determined using a formula
that appropriates funds

The citizens of Nashville do a great job of preserving and promoting their
heritage

And it's so well-maintained that there are no weight limitations.

"None of these projects will lead to a net reduction
in the Game Fund. The
36-turbine wind farm on the Pocono plateau offers a chance to develop much
needed pre-construction protocols and assessments of bat activity, measure
site-specific changes
in bat activity caused by wind farm development, and
attempt to correlate biological and environmental
variables to the wildlife
impacts. No state
receives more than five percent or less than one
percent of the available
funds.
Today, we recognize the newest Preserve America Communities
, the first
Preserve America Neighborhoods, and the first Preserve America Grant
recipients. And
since then, more than 362 communities have been designated
in 46 states.
The United States has
90 metropolitan areas with 200,000 or more residents.

painstakingly recorded in 1958 will not just preserve Fuller's voice
but also give researchers new perspectives on individual pieces and
the significance of the Fuller
collection, overall. Organizations concerned with the preservation of historic buildings throughout
the world or in a specific country, region, city or town are suitable for this category.
